The Benefits of Invisalign

Metal braces aren't the only choice if you're unhappy with your smile. Misaligned teeth and bite problems can also be improved with Invisalign treatment, an orthodontic option that corrects smile issues discreetly. Dr. Richard Lee-Shanok of Newmarket Dentistry offers the treatment in his Newmarket, ON, office.

Invisalign doesn't change your appearance

Metal braces are anything but subtle. In fact, every time you speak, talk or laugh, the world is treated to a flash of metal. Invisalign offers a much more subtle type of orthodontic treatment.

The system uses a series of clear, removable aligner trays that are worn for approximately 20 to 22 hours per day. Your trays are designed using digital X-rays, images and impressions taken in your Newmarket dentist's office. Each tray in the series is worn for two weeks before being exchanged for the next set.

Food restrictions are unnecessary

Unlike your friends who wear metal braces, you won't be given a list of foods to avoid when you choose Invisalign. You can eat anything you want whenever you want. Before you eat, you'll remove your aligner trays and place them in a case. After the meal is over, you'll only need to rinse them and place them back in your mouth. It's also a good idea to remove your trays when you drink anything other than water, as coffee, tea, cola, wine and other drinks can stain the plastic.

Brushing won't become a time-consuming experience

Brushing and flossing become much more time-intensive tasks if you wear metal braces. If you're not careful, you can break a wire or dislodge a bracket if you brush too hard. Luckily, you won't need to add another second to your oral hygiene routine when you wear Invisalign aligner trays. You'll simply remove the trays and brush and floss as usual.

Invisalign offers a special benefit for adults

Straightening your teeth will probably take about the same amount of time whether you wear metal braces or Invisalign if you're a teenager. That's not the case for adults. Treatment can be accomplished in as little as one year for many adults, although the length of treatment will depend on the severity of your orthodontic issues.
