Are you experiencing consistent tooth or jaw pain? Have you noticed lingering tooth sensitivity to hot or cold? If these things sound familiar to you, you may be a candidate for root canal therapy. Newmarket Dentistry can be your local root canal resource in Newmarket, ON.

Here are some frequently asked questions about root canal therapy to get you started:

What is root canal therapy?

A root canal is a process during which your dentist removes dead pulp out of the center of your tooth, and takes the dead tooth roots out of your gums, to relieve pain and maintain the integrity of your natural tooth.

Do I need a root canal?

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), symptoms of a root canal include:

  • Constant jaw or tooth pain
  • Severe pain when biting down
  • Lingering pain after eating hot or cold foods
  • Gum swelling and redness

How does a root canal work?

Typically, a root canal takes at least two appointments. The first appointment is the removal of tooth pulp and roots, and placement of antibiotics to kill any infection that may exist in your gums. A temporary filling is placed over the tooth so you can still eat and drink without pain.

After a few weeks, you'll have a second appointment during which the dentist will check the gums under your tooth, and create a crown to place over the tooth. This completes the process of root canal therapy.

Does a root canal hurt?

A common misconception about root canals is that they cause a lot of pain. In fact, root canal therapy is a procedure that is designed to alleviate pain while also keeping the tooth intact.

Just like with a filling, you will receive a local anesthetic in your gums to prevent you from feeling anything during the procedure. You may experience normal soreness after the procedure, but once it is complete, it's just like you have your own natural tooth!

Will my teeth require special care?

After a root canal, it's important to continue to practice strict oral hygiene. For a healthy smile, brush twice a day and floss once a day.
